Face to face workshop: I beg to differ! Debate training for research

This workshop is offered in cooperation with the GRK 2737 STRESSistance.

05.12.2022, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Room 46-225

Young scientists who would like to learn through debating how to present their own arguments convincingly and to deal with opposition in a productive way.

Starting point

Science is based on empirical evidence - and needs the best arguments to prevail against other points of view. Research benefits from disputes, from the clash of scientific opinions scientific opinions, paradigms and contradictory results. The high scientific argumentation requires researchers to have above-average argumentative skills, both in communicating within their own field as well as in public outreach.

Participants are motivated and able to actively contribute to a culture of academic debate. They are capable to support their own ideas with argumentative confidence and to integrate counter arguments beneficially into their research. Participants answer critical questions confidently. The participants can confidently transfer the knowledge gained from the debate training to important persuasive situations in research, such as scientific presentations and discussions or the defense of the doctoral thesis.

  • Finding valid arguments
  • Arguing in an addressee-oriented way
  • Checking arguments for their relevance
